Harmonicas set tone for Macao in HK

SUPPLIERS in Macao ventured over to neighbouring Hong Kong as part of a morning of seminars and business presentations with one team-building agency adding harmony to proceedings through a musical “icebreaker”.

Hong Kong-based Team Building Asia – which also provides services in Macao – struck a chord of cooperation with its “Harmonica Harmony” program at the event organised by Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO).

TBA’s David Simpson orchestrates the harmonica symphony at The Mira

Following the opening address by MGTO Hong Kong representative Stanley Wong to more than 100 trade partners and business event operators, Team Building Asia (TBA) facilitator David Simpson introduced attendees to the harmonica.

“Attendees found harmonicas on their seats, a surprise that quickly turned into a room-wide symphony,” said a TBA spokesperson.

Events space at The Mira hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui saw seminar attendees soon exhaling and inhaling to create a coordinated group performance.

“Participants learned basic harmonica techniques and within minutes were playing simple tunes together. What began as noisy and awkward quickly evolved into a lighthearted and surprisingly uplifting group experience,” TBA said in a social media posting.

“This culturally infused activity was no coincidence. David pointed out that The King’s Harmonica Quintet, [was an] arrangement of Song of Macau [performed] at Macau Arts Festival.

“The icebreaker represented collaboration, communication, and rhythm between people. Just like in business, each person contributed a small part to something much greater. For corporate groups seeking engaging and meaningful team-building solutions, this activity proved how powerful shared experiences can be in breaking down barriers and building connections.”

Harmonicas setting the tone for the Macao seminar

With the tone set for the rest of the day, senior MGTO marketing manager Kelly Cheung presented tourism updates highlighting a strong rebound for Macao. From January to March 2025, Macao welcomed over 9.9 million visitors, with overnight stays accounting for over 4 million. Mainland China remained the top source of arrivals, followed by Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Southeast Asian markets.

Macau’s shift towards experiential corporate events was further underscored by presentations from Macau-based Small World Experience, Fun Fun Kart, and others with a growing portfolio of new team-building options.

Among the attractions highlighted at the event were  immersive shows such as Macau 2049, directed by Zhang Yimou, indoor skydiving at GoAirborne, and high-tech kart racing at Fun Fun Kart. In addition there are new rooftop gardens, cabana lounges, and outdoor event spaces with stunning backdrops for team-building, product launches, and incentive trips.

“A big thank you to the Macao Government Tourism Office in Hong Kong for organising this fantastic event,” Bruno Simões, who operates Small World Experience events company and DOC DMC Macau-Hong Kong, said in a social media posting.

“It’s always great to see so many industry peers come together each year. At smallWORLD Experience, we always have updates and new offerings to share, and I’m thrilled to connect with everyone about the innovative team-building experiences we provide. Let’s keep the momentum going and explore new possibilities in the MICE sector together.”
