Thailand woos Hong Kong planners

TCEB luncheon seminar hears of kingdom’s return to business events, Eastern Economic Corridor and subsidies for conference organisers

A THAI diplomat told a Hong Kong audience of business event planners that the APEC Summit being held in Bangkok this month will focus on restoring cross-border travel across Asia amid increased health security.

Sorayod Kumbunlue (right), deputy consul general Royal Thai Consulate-General of Hong Kong, was the guest of honour at a luncheon seminar organised by Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB)’s representatives in the city.

The luncheon at Island Shangri-la was the first  networking event held in Hong Kong by TCEB for nearly three years after Covid brought on travel and social distancing restrictions.

Sorayod said after the event that it had generated “positive feedback for the exhibition and convention industry and the economic prospect of Thailand”.

“I believe that under Thailand 4.0 and the Eastern Economic Corridor [EEC] policies, economic revival will continue to flourish beyond 2022,” he said in his opening remarks, referring to development plans for investment in new industries in Chon Buri province, south of Bangkok.

“We look forward to the post-pandemic era and hosting our friends from the international convention community with our memorable Thai hospitality and professionalism.”

TCEB highlighted how Thailand has successfully rolled out measures to overcome the pandemic with entry measures and regulations that also ease travel restrictions for international travellers.

These also played a vital role in several large-scale events returning to Thailand or transferring from cities such as Hong Kong with the number of confirmed events between February and August this year steadily increasing.

The presentation also featured updates on TCEB’s new Convene Plus BCG Scheme to subsidise international events held in Thailand. The support scheme encompasses the Bio-Circular-Green Economy (BCG) model with support for bids, convention planning services, promotion and marketing support, financial support and bonus subventions.
