SANDAKAN, MALAYSIA — The second largest city in Sabah is gearing up to host corporate groups with the opening of Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan.
Sandakan, located along the east coast of Borneo, is slowly emerging as a gateway to eco-tourism destinations such as the Rainforest Discovery Centre, Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary and Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC), which is set to open to the public in mid-2013. Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan is the city’s first and only four-star hotel to date, offering groups the opportunity to take their next meeting or incentives trip to the young destination.
The 300-room, waterfront hotel houses a 620-sqm ballroom that can accommodate up to 500 guests theatre style. Located on the 13th floor, the ballroom can be accessed from a spacious pre-function area that can hold up to 400 people — best for receptions and networking sessions.
The ballroom also connects to the poolside deck, which boasts an infinity pool overlooking the Sulu Sea. The outdoor venue can be booked for cocktails, with standing room enough for 120.
Seven meeting rooms — on the 12th floor — are also available, with areas of 22 sqm to 108 sqm. The rooms can hold anywhere from six people in a U-shape setup to 80 people theatre style.
Groups will also find easy access to the Sandakan Convention Centre via lift or staircase to the hotel’s 11th floor. The convention centre is the largest meeting venue in Sandakan at 1,500 sqm; it can seat up to 1,500 people, banquet style.
Other function venues include The Eatery, the hotel’s signature restaurant; The Best Brew pub with indoor and al fresco spaces, and the Cigar Room. Other offsite options around the city are available: the Agnes Keith English Tea House, Ocean King Seafood Restaurant and Puu Jih Shih Temple.
