Business as usual in Thailand despite security increase

Local authorities have increased security across Thailand following a spate of bombings.

Security has been increased at all major attractions, shopping areas, airports and train stations, according to Thai Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB).

The bureau has issued assurances that business events are continuing as usual.

Andrew Langdon, senior vice president Asia of Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts, says hotel performance has been unaffected.

“Our hotels somewhat surprisingly saw more bookings than cancellations on Friday August 12, the day of the tragic events. For example, our Phuket properties registered very few cancellations, equating to only 0.02 percent of total annual room nights, although we received more bookings than cancellations on the very same day."

Langdon is optimistic for the future, despite recent events:

“For the remainder of 2016, we remain very positive for Thailand, with our hotels in Phuket and Bangkok forecasting to outperform the same period in 2015, on the back of higher occupancies and improving average room rates.

“Thailand has endured over a decade of upheaval and tragedy. However, the market continues to grow and demonstrates an ever increasing maturity and resilience. We certainly are very committed to Thailand with four properties here – most recently opening the Mövenpick Siam Hotel Pattaya earlier this year," he said.

From August 10-12, a total of 13 bombs hit five Thai provinces, according to the Bangkok Post. Tourist areas including Hua Hin and Phuket were targeted. At least four people were killed and 35 injured.

Despite the attacks, business events took place as planned on August 12 for the national public holiday (Mother’s Day) and the 84th birthday of Queen Sirikit, TCEB says.

The bureau reports that hotels, venues and attractions were not affected on August 12. Transportation links, roads and airports continued to operate as normal.

On August 12, Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha offered his condolences to victims and urged members of the public to remain calm in a TV-address that was also reported by TCEB.

On the evening of August 13, TCEB reported that the situation was normal across Thailand. The bureau has not issued any further updates on the situation.
