Singapore doubles down on MICE sustainability

A SUSTAINABILITY “playbook” aimed at business event venues is one of two major initiatives unveiled by Singapore Tourism Board to support the city state’s Green Plan 2030.

Following the Global Sustainable Conference, which came to close November 16 on the resort island of Sentosa, Singapore Tourism Board said it is pioneering the world’s first global standard for visitor attractions..

The second initiative is the MICE Venue Sustainability Playbook, a comprehensive guide to enhancing green practices across the business events industry.

It was the first time that the Global Sustainable Tourism Council held its conference (GSTC2024) in Singapore and Alvin Tan, the government minister with responsibility for trade and Industry, announced the measures during the event.

Ong Huey Hong, Singapore Tourism Board

Ong Huey Hong, Singapore Tourism Board’s chief sustainability officer, said: “These initiatives are pivotal in positioning Singapore as a leading sustainable urban destination and demonstrating our commitment to sustainability.

“By developing world-class standards and providing the industry with practical tools, we are not only enhancing our own tourism sector but also contributing to global sustainability efforts in tourism,” she said.

The MICE Venue Sustainability Playbook, which can help venues manage their carbon emissions, is based on the findings from a national MICE Industry Carbon and Waste Baseline exercise launched in 2023.

The book also offers practical recommendations for venues to enhance their energy efficiency, waste management, and water conservation efforts, in line with advancing their sustainability ambitions.

A decarbonisation framework based on best practices from purpose-built MICE venues and international counterparts is also featured along with government-backed support schemes to drive decarbonisation across Singapore venues.
