LED walls are cropping up in hotel ballrooms around the world – particularly in Asia where technology dominates. Proponents of LEDs claim projectors are becoming yesterday’s thing: they require twice as much power, and are no match to an LED wall when it comes to image quality. They’re a boon for hoteliers too; lasting an average 12 years on a projector’s five. Though more expensive upfront, installation costs are dropping, and many hotels that have yet to commit to a permanent fixture rent moveable walls for events on request.
Who has them? The Grand Hyatt Hong Kong was the first to introduce the LED wall to Hong Kong and the InterContinental Hong Kong introduced the city’s largest wall in September 2014, which is able to stream a live feed of the spectacular views of Victoria Harbour from outside the hotel. JW Marriott Dongdaemun Square Seoul is the only hotel in the city to have an LED wall connected by 98 separate panels. The Shangri-La Surabaya installed a 3×6 m LED wall in May last year while the Sofitel Nanjing Galaxy and the Westin Bund Shanghai offer mobile LED walls for corporate meetings and other events.
