HONG KONG is gearing up for a season of major international events as two of its marquee attractions – Art Basel Hong Kong and a 50th anniversary edition of the city’s Rugby Sevens – top a new “Mega 8” series.
The Mega 8 campaign is being positioned by Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) to show how the city has the scale, diversity and international pull to reinforce its credentials as “Asia’s Events Capital”.
Taking place across March and April, the dual showcase of world‑class contemporary art and one of rugby’s most celebrated tournaments adds commercial weight to a broader line‑up of cultural, sporting and business events.

Together, they are expected to draw global visitors, generate projects for event planners, stimulate spending across hospitality and retail, and underline Hong Kong’s resilience as a hub for premium tourism and international gatherings.
Bundled with other large‑scale exhibitions, conferences and citywide programmes, the Mega 8 is designed to set the tone for a high‑impact season designed to revive demand and reinforce confidence in Hong Kong among global investors.

The campaign brings together eight highlighted “mega events” across arts, pop culture and sports, with citywide activities organised to spark enthusiasm for the Mega 8 season across Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area and internationally. Business events include international trade expos and conferences at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) and AsiaWorld‑Expo.
“Through the ‘Hong Kong Mega 8’ campaign, HKTB has brought together highlighted art and sports mega events and citywide programmes to fully showcase Hong Kong’s strengths as the ‘Events Capital of Asia’,” HKTB Chairman Peter Lam said.
GREAT SPORTS
Among the sporting events in the Mega 8 is the Hong Kong Sevens at Kai Tak Stadium, April 17-19, which will be marking its 50th anniversary.The sporting elements extend to two big horse-race meetings – the Hong Kong Derby and Champions Day – and cycling’s UCI Track World Cup at the Hong Kong Velodrome.
Lam thanked one of Hong Kong’s big property companies for its support in providing space for some of the art attractions in the CBD.
In a statement issued this week, HKTB said the heart of the city’s Central district would be transformed by Hongkong Land into a “vibrant cultural journey. Art Walk in Central will feature guided tours, performance-led walks, and public art encounters such as visitors invited to view sculptures at Hongkong Land properties.

“For the first time, HKTB is partnering with Art Basel to bring digital arts into local neighbourhoods. We would like to thank Hongkong Land for its strong support, which allow us to bring world‐class public art to the heart of Central, Lam said.
“We will also work with our trade partners in various sectors to launch and promote the city’s diversified travel experiences. Our aim is to maximise the economic benefits of mega events by enhancing the visitor experience, encouraging them to extend their stay in Hong Kong, and creating more business opportunities for the local travel trade and related sectors.”

Artist Ayako Rokkaku is set to present her solo debut at Hongkong Land’s Landmark Atrium, which will be her largest interactive art installation. HKTB said the season culminates in a spectacular finale called OPEN and Art on the Move trucks – a street celebration along Chater Road on March 29.
Art Basel will bring its global initiative “Zero 10” from Art Basel Miami Beach to its Hong Kong edition for its Asia debut, presenting digital artworks encompassing code-based creations, light and sound. South Korean digital artist DeeKay – highly regarded by global NFT collectors – will showcase his digital artworks in the “Zero 10” sector.
Backgrounder… HKTB draws up deal with Art Basel
To extend digital art experiences beyond the show floor, HKTB and Art Basel are launching Digital Art @Central ahead of the fair’s opening. This will see DeeKay’s new digital animation artwork, DeePle the People, from the fair into the urban space of Central.
DeeKay created some 100 individually designed characters, and incorporated elements from the city’s signature festivities including dragon boat paddlers, jockeys, chefs and performers to bring a distinct Hong Kong character to the work.

The artwork will be projected onto the façade of the Hong Kong Club building in Central from 7pm to 11pm daily until March 29.
“Beyond the skyline and landmarks, I wanted to reflect the city as a living, moving place shaped by its people, its rhythm, and its cultural vibrancy,” the artist was quoted as saying.

HKTB has also teamed up with Art Central to launch the digital “Hong Kong Art Month Discovery Guide”. The guide will provide travel information and information about events across the city’s art districts.
Roadshows in the Chinese mainland and overseas markets are being organised with the travel trade to boost interest in mega events and encourage visitors to extend their stay in Hong Kong.
