Durians, food trucks roll up as 11,000 convene

Insurance conference brings thousands to Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre, contributing nearly US$40m to national economy

MALAYSIA International Trade and Exhibition Centre hosted another mega convention by welcoming 11,000 insurance industry delegates attending the 15th Worldwide Chinese Life Insurance Congress & 2024 IDA Annual Conference.

The four-day conference follows the 2024 Perfect China International Convention at MITEC in June which featured a banquet for 10,000 delegates.

Worldwide Chinese Life Insurance Congress (WCLIC) was held August 9-12 along with the 26th National Chinese Life Insurance Congress. Supported by Tourism Malaysia and Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), the events attracted delegates from more than 250 institutions across 17 countries and regions.

MyCEB reported that the event generated an estimated economic impact of MYR176.5 million (about US$39.7m) for Malaysia.

In support of local small businesses, MITEC incorporated several unique elements into the event including collaboration with the KL Food Truck Association (right) offering delegates a culinary journey through Malaysia, featuring an array of local street food. The venue also partnered with MyCreative Ventures Group which works with local creatives to showcase and sell their handcrafted artisanal products.

MITEC also converted its huge loading dock to host a Durian Fiesta Bazaar, catering to Asia’s fondness for the distinctive fruit while celebrating Malaysian food culture, supporting local enterprises and enriching the delegate experience.

“After tirelessly pursuing this opportunity since 2019, our team is both elated and deeply honoured to have played host to such a significant event,” Cemone Chua, MITEC’s head of marketing and sales, said.

“The success of this convention marks a major achievement for MITEC and reflects our unwavering dedication to providing a world class venue for global business gatherings. We are excited to continue building on this success and to serve as a leading hub for future international events,” Chua said.

The success of WCLIC was driven by the concerted efforts of our passionate professional team at MITEC that included 1,711 casual labour, whose collaborative work showcased our venue’s impressive capacity and operational capability
