MyCEB appoints first woman to CEO role

Business events veteran takes the helm following departure of Azman Tambi Chik after less than a year in the role. Announcement comes as Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau expands global presence

TAN MEI PHING has become the first woman to step into the chief executive role at Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau – albeit on an acting basis.

The acting-CEO appointment follows the resignation on August 19 of Azman Tambi Chik who had been made MyCEB chief executive in November 2023.

Azman had a background in Malaysian businesses including Damansara Holding, Johor Corporation and Rangkaian Hotel Seri Malaysia. His predecessor, Abdul Khani Daud – a Tourism Malaysia veteran – retired from MyCEB in April 2023.

MyCEB’s PR department did not disclose details when contacted by MIX as to the reasons behind Azman’s departure, but did confirm that Tan would be the first woman to have held the top executive role.

“She will remain as an acting CEO until further notice,” a spokesperson told MIX yesterday.

MyCEB said in a statement issued on Wednesday that Tan’s appointment came as the bureau expanded its “influence and impact on the global stage”.

Her deep expertise in business events, coupled with extensive industry knowledge, positions her to lead MyCEB into its next phase of development with confidence and vision.

“Throughout her 12 years tenure at MyCEB, Tan Mei Phing has demonstrated exceptional leadership and a keen understanding of the business events landscape.”

Tan has worked across several key divisions at MyCEB, including Event Facilitation, Sales, Marketing and Branding, Industry Development, PR and Communications, and Market Intelligence.

“Her strategic oversight in these areas has been instrumental in elevating Malaysia’s profile as a leading hub for international business events and conferences,” the MyCEB statement continued.

Backgrounder… Azman joins MyCEB as chief executive

Two women are on MyCEB’s board of directors: Rozalinawati Che Roslee and company secretary Sunannah Chandradasan.

Tan began her career with an international DMC and later became a PCO involved with major conferences in Malaysia.
