Brisbane releases ‘value-added’ facts for planners

The Brisbane Convention Bureau is celebrating Global Meetings Industry Day (GMID) by publishing a list of ‘quirky’ facts about the value of business events to the city.

Bureau General Manager Rob Nelson said that “in 2014-15 alone, Brisbane staged more than 1,400 business events resulting in 646,000 delegate days and delivering an estimated economic impact of A$391 million to the city,” he said.

“Business events support our city’s economy, venues, hotels and suppliers.

“They also create a platform for sharing valuable knowledge, build important professional networks and often leave lasting memories for delegates of their time spent in destinations they might not otherwise get to visit.”

Quirky Brisbane GMID16 facts:

·         Business events in Brisbane brought in an estimated A$1.35 billion to our city’s economy over the last five years – that’s enough to host 160 G20s.

·         The Brisbane Convention Bureau has brought in 36,000 conference delegates to Brisbane over the last five years – that’s more than two sold-out Madonna concerts at Brisbane Entertainment Centre.

·         In the last five years, conferences created 2.2 million hotel room nights in Brisbane – an equivalent number to the city’s population.

·         In 2014-15 Brisbane staged more than 1,400 business events – if an event was a kilometre, that would equal the distance between Brisbane and Townsville, North Queensland.
