High-speed sleeper trains to link HK with Beijing, Shanghai

OVERNIGHT high-speed sleeper trains between linking Hong Kong with Beijing and Shanghai will begin operations on June 15. The new services are expected to reduce travel times by about a half.

Journeys between Beijing and Hong Kong will be reduced to about 12 hours, and 11 hours between Shanghai and Hong Kong, China State Railway Group announced on Tuesday.

The current “non-high-speed” services between Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong will be replaced by high-speed trains, enabling passengers to take an overnight sleeper train from Hong Kong and arrive in either city the following morning.

The new services are scheduled to run between Beijing West Railway Station, Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station and Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Station, Xinhua quoted China Railway as saying.

Ticket sales for the high-speed sleeper trains opened on Wednesday with online sales for the inaugural services reported to be sold out.
