Sarawak celebrates decade of business events

It’s been a big month for Sarawak. The Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) celebrated a decade of business events, which brought over 400 events to the city, and its 8th annual award ceremony earlier this month.

Since 2006, SCB has hosted 424 events and almost 167,000 international delegates.

The bureau has also supported nearly other 200 events, earning the State’s economy RM92 million (approx US$23m).

The 8th Anak Sarakwak Award ceremony, the State’s flagship award for the Business Events sector, spanned three days to mark the momentous occasion.

“Business Events was virtually uncharted territory in Malaysia until the State Bureau began a decade ago, an initiative that has resulted in the positioning of Sarawak as one of the leading second tier destinations of the Asia Pacific region,” says Leo Michael Toyad, chairman of SCB, in his opening speech.

This year’s winners included: Prof. Dr. V. Sivaram of Bangalore University (Outstanding Achievement Award), Obstetrical & Gynecological Society of Malaysia (Convention of Excellence Award), Borneo Adventure (Corporate Event of Excellence Award), Semadang Borneo Adventure (Products and Services of Excellence Award), Imperial Hotel Kuching (Meeting Venue of Excellence Award), and Ms. Charlene Bong of Pullman Kuching (Young Leadership Scholarship Award).

Awardees received marketing and training grants worth either RM10,000 (approx US$2,500) or RM20,000.
