Penang biz-event boom bolsters innovation

PENANG’s business events sector is benefiting from a “landmark year”, propelled by a combination of infrastructure expansion, improved global connectivity and rising interest from high‑growth industries such as advanced manufacturing, AI and marine-related technologies.

According to new figures released by the Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB), the northern Malaysian state recorded 3,391 business events in 2025, a sharp 64.7 per cent rise from the previous year.

Delegate numbers climbed to 451,198, while hotel room nights grew nearly 48 per cent to more than 824,000. The sector generated an estimated RM1.91 billion (about USD483.8m) in economic event impact, underscoring its role as one of Penang’s most dynamic economic engines.

Officials attribute this upswing in part to a surge in infrastructure development. More than 2,000 new hotel rooms came online over the past year, easing capacity constraints for large-scale gatherings.

Expanded direct air links have also strengthened Penang’s position as a regional hub, making it more accessible to international delegates and organisers seeking a destination with strong logistical advantages.

“These results demonstrate that business events are not only a significant economic driver for Penang but also a key contributor to the state’s long-term vision under Penang 2030,” said YB Wong Hon Wai, Penang State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy.

“There is strong potential for further growth in sectors such as advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and marine-related industries.

“These emerging and strategic sectors present new opportunities to attract high-value business events that are closely aligned with Penang’s long-term economic priorities,” Wong said.

Penang has long been a centre for global manufacturing, particularly in semiconductors and electronics. Industry observers note that the state’s expanding meetings and exhibitions capacity is increasingly being harnessed to support these strategic clusters – from technical congresses and investment summits to specialised trade exhibitions that bring together regional innovators.

Officials believe AI and marine-related industries will follow similar trajectories, using business events as catalysts for knowledge exchange and commercial partnerships.

PCEB’s chief executive, Ashwin Gunasekeran, said the bureau’s data-driven approach has helped align event attraction with the state’s future economic strengths. “At PCEB, we turn insight and foresight into action.

“By using data, market intelligence, and global best practices, we refine our strategies to help partners transform opportunities into real outcomes and measurable impact across Penang’s business events ecosystem.”

To consolidate its global positioning, Penang is advancing the Penang Inspiring Meetings campaign – an initiative designed not only to attract events but to elevate them by creating experiences that foster genuine connection and long-term engagement.

The campaign seeks to place Penang firmly on the international business events map by emphasising transformative and experiential elements that extend beyond the traditional conference format.
