Sports park brings the beach to Kai Tak

KAI TAK Sports Park has unveiled new facilities following the success of its main stadiums and indoor arena in strengthening Hong Kong’s role as an international events city.

The 50,000-seat Kai Tak Stadium along with a junior stadium and the arena have been positioned towards international sporting events and the upcoming China National Games. Now an outdoor sports and entertainment zone in the sports park’s North Garden is being targeted at community and family activities.

Covered multi-purpose courts for activities such as climbing are among the new facilities at Kai Tak Sports Park

Kai Tak Sports Park (KTSP)’s new venues feature a covered facility and a beach-volleyball court along with a multi-purpose tennis court set to open in the next three months.

There is also the 4,300 sqm Playfield 5, a family friendly recreation area inspired by the five Chinese elements.

Key features of the playground include sand pits, a boulder wall, a zip line, two play towers each over 10 metres high, along with interactive playground facilities and a grassy relaxation zone, all designed to make the facility a year-round destination

“With the launch of the new outdoor sports zone and Playfield 5, all sports facilities within the Sports Park will be fully open to the public,” John Sharkey, CEO of Kai Tak Sports Park, said.

“This allows citizens to build a healthy lifestyle while creating joyful, shared moments for families of all ages.”

A KTSP spokesperson said the covered court, sanded area and tennis court would be managed by three professional sports organisations to hold training, local and international competitions, community events and youth development initiatives.

Seating areas and rest spaces surround each venue and, when not in use for competitions or organisation bookings, the three outdoor courts will be available for reservation by “Friends of KTSP” members.
