Adelaide: Australia’s premier health and life sciences meeting destination

Adelaide, South Australia – as home to the largest BioMed ‘city’ in the Southern Hemisphere and which brings together institutions from research, development, and clinical right through to business development, is the premier Australian destination for Health and Life Science meetings.

Conveniently, this large A$3.6bn greenfield healthcare precinct sits on the northwest corner of Adelaide adjacent the Adelaide Convention Centre and within walking distance of the Riverbank precinct – arguably the most connected enter- tainment, business and hospitality area of any Australian city.

A free tram service connects the BioMed precinct with major hotels and the rest of the CBD although walking is a very easy option.

The current jewel in the crown of this precinct is the SAHMRI (pictured) – the South Australian Health And Medical Research Institute which opened in late 2013. Architecturally the SAHMRI is globally recognised and highly awarded for its design and green properties.

Adelaide BioMed City is comprised of:

  • South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute – opened 2013.

  • The new Royal Adelaide Hospital – opening 2016.

  • The University of Adelaide’s Health and Medical Sciences Building – under construction, opening 2017. This will support Medicine, Nursing and Dentistry students and about 400 health sciences researchers. The 12-storey building is the largest capital works project in the university’s 140-year history.

  • The University of South Australia’s Health Innovation Building – Currently under construction. The 15-storey health and research facility will support a collaborative and holistic approach to health research.

  • ‘SAHMRI 2’ – Flinders University’s John Chalmers Centre for Transforming Healthcare. An opening date has not yet been set, but the A$280 million is proposed to be constructed alongside the current SAHMRI building to house Australia’s first proton therapy unit – an $80 million machine to target otherwise inoperable cancerous tumours. Flinders University has committed funding alongside a State government contribution to have a cancer research hub in the building.

  • The new Women’s and Children’s Hospital – Planned, with a targeted opening of 2023.
