Film director Kawase among Osaka World Expo creatives

ORGANISERS of the 2025 World Expo Osaka have lined up eight of Japan’s eminent artists and scientists to be the creative forces behind the signature pavilions at the event.

An estimated 3.5 million overseas arrivals are expected to be among a total of 28.2 million visitors to the expo, according to organising body, the Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition.

The expo will be held on Yumeshima, an artificial island in Osaka Bay, from April 13 through October 13, with a list of 150 countries and regions – topped by the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan – and 25 international organisations so far confirmed.

Cannes Film Festival award-winning director Naomi Kawase is among the eight signature-pavilion creators who have the task of interpreting the expo’s central theme of “Designing Future Society for Our Lives”.

Biologist Shinichi Fukuoka, anime creator Shoji Kawamori, writer Kundo Koyama, roboticist Hiroshi Ishiguro, musician and maths researcher Sachiko Nakajima, media artist Yoichi Ochiai and health-policy expert Hiroaki Miyata are the other producers, the Kyodo news agency reported.

Kawase, who also directed the official film of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, said creating a venue in a certain space was a way of leaving people with genuine feelings and memories of an event. Her pavilion will be a “dialogue theatre” which will allow real-time dialogue between people who do not know each other through a screen, Kyodo reported.

Osaka was recently officially handed the ”baton” to hold the next World Expo after the 2020 Dubai Expo came to a close recently.
