SEOUL In recent years, the vibrant Korean popular culture has put its distinctive stamp on the city. And for event organisers looking for destinations with unique appeal and high-desirability quotient, the global interest in K-Pop, Korean dramas and, now, Gangnam-style has put Seoul at the centre of their radar.
Leveraging on Psy's sensational hit song and music video "Gangnam Style", the Seoul Tourism Organization (STO) released last Friday a five-minute video on YouTube highlighting the credentials of the city's sourther district for hosting high-profile and creative meetings and events.
"During our recent trip to IMEX America, we were bombarded with questions about Gangnam due to the popularity of Psy's hit song. So we decided to have fun with it," Maureen O'Crowley, STO vice-president for Convention Bureau, told Mix. "On an absolute shoestring budget, we made a fun video called, 'What is Gangnam Style?'
She explained that the video dives into the most popular areas of Gangnam to explore its famous attractions.
"Viewers will get a closer look at the trendy and exciting life of Gangnam, and may also be surprised to learn that Gangnam has long been Seoul's powerhouse for international business and meetings," she added.
Gangnam, which means "South of the River", is home to COEX, the city's largest convention venue, along with many of Seoul's major business hotels such as JW Marriott Seoul, Park Hyatt Seoul and two InterContinental hotels.
Less than a week after its posting on YouTube, STO's "What is Gangnam Style" video has garnered more than 174,000 views.
Coupled with the video, STO's business events division is also currently running a competition on its Facebook page, encouraging event participants to share their thoughts on Gangnam Style. One lucky winner will receive two round-trip flights to Seoul for a first-hand look at the place that started it all. There will also be 30 Amazon gift cards to be given away.
The competiton runs until December 12. For more details, visit www.facebook.com/miceseoul
