TCEB puts Thai events on green mission

Five-year net zero target announced for business events as convention bureau seeks to bolster Thailand’s green MICE leadership credentials

THAILAND Convention and Exhibition Bureau has raised the sustainability bar for the country’s MICE sector, updating its Terms of Reference for bidders and proposal submitters to require carbon-neutral event planning.

The move is part of a five-year mission led by TCEB to strengthen Thailand’s green MICE leadership. The bureau plans to steer the kingdom’s business events industry towards carbon neutrality and a Net Zero Carbon future, with a target of cutting emissions by 20,000 TonCO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent tonnes) by 2030.

Changes mean organisers must calculate their event’s carbon footprint, implement reduction measures, and either certify compliance or follow TCEB’s guidance.

Offsetting is also encouraged, with organisers sourcing carbon credits from Thai greenhouse gas reduction projects to ensure net emissions are neutralised.

Supawan Teerarat, President of TCEB, said the changes reflect Thailand’s commitment to sustainable development and align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

“Thailand is advancing sustainability from aspiration to achievement, turning long-term commitments into measurable impacts,” Teerarat said.

“Integrating sustainability into every aspect of the MICE industry is both a responsibility and a strategic direction that strengthens Thailand’s competitiveness and reaffirms its position as a premier MICE destination, meeting the needs of businesses that prioritise sustainability,” she said.

In FY2025, Thai MICE events collectively reduced and avoided 2,445.97 TonCO2e across 232 events, compared to the previous year’s 780 TonCO2e. TCEB said the 313 percent increase underscored the industry’s rising commitment to environmentally responsible event management.

TCEB is backing this progress with practical tools, including a carbon footprint avoidance calculator, the Zero Carbon app from the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organisation, and access to domestic carbon credit projects. A network of auditing and verification bodies will also help organisers meet compliance standards.

“This commitment reflects TCEB’s readiness to meet the evolving expectations of the global business community and our dedication to helping international clients host sustainable, high-impact events in Thailand,” added Teerarat.
