Venue and group activity ideas for Copenhagen
The Danish capital is at ease with itself, ranking high in happiness, ecology, digital prowess and green conferences. Martin Donovan reports

18 May 2017

USPs
Before considering what the Danish capital has to offer, it’s useful to weigh up Denmark’s contribution to the world. For a small nation of 5.5 million people it certainly punches above its weight in terms of technology and exports. Denmark is a leader in wind-turbine production, it borrowed the name of a legendary Viking king to give the world Bluetooth wireless technology, it has saturated global sports sponsorship and bars across Asia with the Carlsberg brand, then there’s Hans Christian Andersen, Danish design, pastries, bacon… the list goes on.

Not surprisingly, people in Copenhagen are more than content, while indices used by business and marketing analysts give further testimony: “the world’s most livable city”, least corrupt country in the world, home to the most happiest people – and this year the “most digital nation” in the European Union.

Danes take the stream of accolades in their stride, but they’re more steadfast on environmental matters with Copenhagen seen as the capital of sustainable meetings.

To unwind, there are the rival brews of Tuborg and the other lager, and 15 restaurants that share 18 Michelin stars.

Venues
CPH Conference – A prime downtown meeting venue with 24 rooms and auditoriums plus a dedicated events team.

Circus Building – A venue in fitting with Copenhagen’s architectural character, and among the choices of unique and historic buildings. Planners will find breakout rooms and three venues suitable for plenary sessions.

Royal Theatre (above) – The venue’s Old Stage facility offers a baroque-style setting with ornate décor to create unique receptions and gala dinners.

Train Workshop – A former repair depot that lends itself to the most creative of event designers where the occasions are grand and scalable.

Connections
Singapore Airlines operates services to Copenhagen, which is also served by Thai Airways. Scandinavian Airlines operates services to Beijing and Shanghai.

Visitors from Asia also use land routes to Copenhagen from northern Germany, such as Hamburg, or flight connections via Paris, London, Helsinki or Frankfurt. The Swedish city of Malmo is accessible by bridge across the Øresund Strait.

Wonderful Copenhagen (as in the song title) is the city’s tourism marketing body, under which the convention bureau operates.

Excursions
Kronborg Castle (above) – A Unesco Heritage Site and known to fans of Shakespeare as Elsinore, the setting for the Bard’s famous tragedy, Hamlet. Visit the castle via the town of Helsingor, about a 45 minute drive north of Copenhagen.

Danish Riviera – Yes, there is such a place! North along the coast, about 40 minutes, from Copenhagen where the Louisiana Art Museum and traditional Danish dining establishments such as Gamle Humlebaek Kro can be found, and even beaches.

The city – Another feather in the cap is Copenhagen being named the “most walkable city”. Sights such as the colourful waterfront buildings of Nyvhan, streets that date back to the Middle Ages, the Royal Danish Playhouse, gardens and parks, and that immortal tribute to Hans Christian Andersen, the Statue of the Little Mermaid, are all accessible from city centre hotels and conference venues. For art lovers and trendsetters – or those who like to watch them – the Meatpacking District is among the many cool places to be in Copenhagen.
